January 2010
Occasionally I go through the most recent e-mails I've
received and pick a few to share with you. I try to personally respond
to every e-mail I receive, but I also post a few here in my Q&A column.

Joe, I thought you would like this custom I did. I have been a big
fan of your site for at least five or six years, I have about 9,000
cars and hundreds of Hollywood Star Cars. I live in Niles, Ohio near
Youngstown and next time I'm at Woodward you'll have to point out the
best place to see the Star Cars on Woodward Ave. Anyways your site is
awesome and keep up the good work. I hope to have my collection on
your site some day when I get the proper pix. About the Ferrari, it's
a 1/64th Hot Wheels from the Toy's R Us Ferrari Collection last year,
I did see on their collector site that they're releasing it in silver
as a Walmart Valentines Day Car. I sold the one in the pix for $25 so
I'm definitely going to pick another up from Walmart and do up another
for my collection.
Dedicated to your site,
Tony Mason
Hi
Tony,
Nice custom job on that Ferrari. I know the Miami Vice
Ferrari Daytona Spyder 365 CTS4 would be a big seller if Mattel was to
officially produce it. I saw the Valentine's Day cars at a nearby
WalMart, but I didn't look closely enough to notice the Ferrari.
I'll have to go back and grab what I can. I think this would be a
fun and easy custom project.

AutoArt has done this 1/43 Road Warrior Set.
Christopher Davies
Hi Chris,
I've gotten a bunch of e-mails alerting me to this new release from
AutoArt. Apparently, they've scaled down their magnificent 1:18
version of the V8 Interceptor and they've added an "enemy car" to do
battle with. I don't normally collect 1:43 scale cars, but this is
definitely a great pair.

Hi Joe. I'm 14, and I LOVE cars. I've
been visiting your website for a couple of years, and I noticed the blog
about the Ecto-1. It reminded me of a DMC I saw when I went to the store,
but this one wasn't from BTTF. It was from Hot Wheels. And once I
thought about it, not many die-cast brands make a plain Delorean. Here's a
pic of it. I hope I can share my small car display soon, but I need
to upload the pictures first. 'Til then, have fun car searching.
- Danny
Hi Danny,
It's always great to hear that young collectors are coming on board.
I like that Delorean casting myself and picked up a couple when I spotted
them at my local Kroger grocery store. I haven't mentioned it on my
site because technically it's not a movie car, but it's a great casting
nevertheless. Thanks for writing and I'm looking forward to seeing
pics of your collection.

Hello,
Congratulations on your collection. I
invite you to have a look at the Tormo Slot models that includes cars from
many films. You can have a look at the 2008 models at the online catalogue
picture album:
All further comments and inquiries are
welcome.
Many thanks, friendly regards,
Lisandro.
Hi Lisandro,
Thanks for bringing these to my attention. Although I don't collect
them, I really do love slot cars. There are some interesting color
choices pictured above, but I would have fun with those!
Thanks for sharing Rebecca. Ecto 1 chasing Inky & Blinky is
great!

The Death Proof Nova....how
much would that be for sale?
Pam Bassett
Well, Pam, waaay back in 2007 Jonas Sevilla of Diamond Bar, CA e-mailed
me pics of his amazing work on the 1:24 scale Death Proof Nova
pictured above. Since then, I've gotten quite a few inquiries about
the car. Unfortunately, my e-mails only date back to 2008, so I've
lost Jonas' contact info. Jonas, if you happen to see this, send me
an e-mail and let me know if you would be willing to make more of these.

Hey Joe.
Just wanted to commend you on your site - I just happened to stumble
across it.
Hey, I have to wonder why there's no mention of the Mini Moke Taxi
from the cult UK series The Prisoner. That is my holy grail of
cars to collect (I had one when I was a kid, and, of course, like all
my other die casts, it was scattered to the wind).
I'm sure you get tons of e-mails from people who tell tales of woe
about cars they had growing up and are now gone. As well as The
Prisoner Moke, I had the original Corgi Batmobile like yours, with
the firing rockets and everything. I remember the precise moment when
the neighbourhood bully smashed it flat with his dad's hammer.... that
was probably around 1972 or so, and I was never able to replace it.
Anyway, I have attached another curio to add to your Flintstones
list. This was a promo
given away in Canadian "Subway" restaurants around 1997. They wer
promo for one of The Flintstones movies, but fortunately they
decided to stick with the regular looking Fred, and not some weird
cartoonified John Goodman bobblehead. There were four vehicles in the
set, but I can't remember what the other three were. I only have
Fred's car. They were issued free with purchase, and came in a plain
clear plastic bag with no card. Fred's car has a hidden wheel which
makes Fred bobble up and down when you push the car, but it's never
worked very well. At least the price was right! The stamp on the
bottom has the "Subway" logo and the Hanna-Barbera trademark, and says
"Produced by Johnson Grossfield Inc. China". Fred's car also has the
Flintstones logo stamped in the back of the awning. The car is about
2" long and 3" high.
Hey, trivia note: I worked for Paramount Pictures for a few years,
including two seasons of Viper. My ex-wife - who is a jeweller
- cast some inch-long solid silver "Defender" (post-morph Viper)
models to give as gifts to the cast and producers. I think there were
eight in all. They're out there somewhere, for the serious obsessive
Viper fan (does such a person exist? Probably not).
Anyhoo, cheers and thanks for the entertaining site!
Morgan
Hi Morgan,
I enjoyed reading your e-mail, but the part about the bully destroying
your Batmobile made me sad. I had never heard of the Mini Moke
until I got your e-mail. The reason it's not featured anywhere
on this site is because it's 1:44 scale. The focus of this
website is 1:64 and 1:18. Who knows, maybe someday I'll expand.
As for The Flintstones car, it's a great-looking piece, but I
don't normally include fast food premiums on my site. They're
usually made of plastic and I like to focus on die-cast metal cars
whenever possible. And finally, I would love to see a pic of one
of those silver morphed Vipers. Wow, what a great collectible
for the "serious obsessive" Viper fan! Yes, they're out
there!
Hi Tim,
I apologize for not keeping on top of these 1:18 scale releases from
Mattel. I heard about them quite awhile ago but had no idea when
they would be released. Then, all of a sudden, they began showing
up. I did a search of eBay and found six of the releases (pictured
above.) Apparently, the Ferraris from Ferris Bueller's Day Off
and Magnum PI haven't hit stores yet. I'm looking forward to
adding those, as well as the Miami Vice Ferrari Testarossa to my
collection, but as for the rest of them, wow, they're pretty obscure.
I do applaud Mattel's effort to give us more TV and movie cars. I'll
do my best to get that 1:18 scale checklist updated. I count on
collectors such as yourself to keep me on my toes.

Hi, Joe.
I only just discovered your site today – and wow, do you know your stuff!
I was really big into Matchbox cars in the 70’s (didn’t like Hot Wheels
much even then), and to tell you the truth, I thought modern die-cast cars
were on their way out. At least that’s how it looks at my Targets and
WalMarts. But that must not be the case, judging from your website. I’m
glad. My collection (which I still have) gave me more pleasure than just
about any other toy I can think about. I KNOW that’s not the case with
today’s kids.
Anyhow, I just wanted to let you know what a
fantastic site (and collection) you have. And I might as well ask you – I
found your site because I am looking for a model of the Pontiac Firebird
Esprit that was used on The Rockford Files. Still living in
the 70’s, I am re-watching all of the Rockford episodes, and I
thought it might be cool to build the scale model of the Esprit, or a
close approximation of it. That is not as easy as it sounds. Apparently,
that particular version of Firebird was not made in either a die-cast or a
model kit, near as I can tell. Can you confirm that?
Thanks for any help you can offer! Again, fabulous
site!
P.S. I should also note that I liked your special
M*A*S*H announcement on the Star Car link (I am a M*A*S*H
fanatic.). And I would love to visit the CHRISTMAS STORY house – I
didn’t know it existed. That is one of my favorite films! (“That
son-of-a-bitch would freeze up in the middle of summer on the equator!”)
Gary Litavis
Hi Gary,
Thanks for the nice comments. Unfortunately, as far as I know, no
Firebird Esprit has ever been released in die-cast form. That's why
the Firebird from The Rockford Files currently resides at #5 on my
Wish List. I really hope a die-cast manufacturer is eye-balling the
Firebird Esprit. I know for a fact it would be a huge seller in ANY
scale!

I saw your site and am looking for the WB Batman
Beyond Batmobile. I cannot find one anywhere. Do you know anyone
who would be willing to sell one? Thanks and your site is great.
Chris Thompson
Hi Chris,
Years ago there used to be a Warner Bros. store at a nearby mall. I
seemed to recall seeing a boxed set of die-cast Batmobiles that included
the Batman Beyond version. I regret not buying it because I
have not seen it since and I began to think my mind was playing tricks on
me. I've never seen any evidence of this car ever existing, and I've
scoured eBay and the internet many, many times. The items that
you see pictured above are part of Hasbro's Micro Machines line.
Although not die-cast metal, the car does display nicely with 1:64 scale
Batmobiles. If anyone out there can produce evidence of a die-cast
version of the Batman Beyond Batmobile, please contact me.
Joe,
That
70's Show anyone? Found this at WalMart this morning.
Chris
I've seen that casting in stores, but didn't make the connection.
I never really watched That 70's Show when it was on TV. How
close is this to the car used on the TV series? Can anyone produce
decent images of the actual car?
Stopped by the mall Saturday to pay some bills and
checked by the Disney Store looking for the larger single blister DJ. As
I had stated before, he's my favorite. Couldn't find him, but picked up
these Tuner 2 packs instead. About 15 bucks per set and I got excited
and couldn't pass them up when I found out they light up.
Patrick Mallette
I pop into the Disney Store occasionally and I'm amazed by
the awesome Cars products they have for sale. I've been SO
tempted to pick up a few things but I want to just focus on the stuff
offered by Mattel. (Even though I couldn't resist the die-cast
Frank.) Thanks for those pics Patrick.
Here's a nice e-mail to end on:
Hey Joe,
Hope you're doing well. We haven't communicated in some time. I hope
you're enjoying the display case I sent you.
Since we last chatted, I have given my entire collection (22 cases like
the one I gave you, with several duplicates in a box, just under 1000
pieces) to my 12 yr old nephew. My brother has mounted each of the cases
on the wall in their basement and they will continue to grow it. My
nephew has marveled at my collection for the past 7 or 8 years and I
thought it was time to pass it on. What really sealed the deal was one
nite this summer they were visiting from KY and at 12 yrs old, he could
name the movie or television show each piece was from. I was blown away.
I decided that this was something my brother and his son could continue
for years to come. My brother tells me that the two of them are now
making weekly stops at all the usual places, searching for new releases.
He also tells me that my nephew visits your website almost daily. It has
given them something to do together, that will last for many years.
Steve Jones
That's
a really great story Steve. Thanks for sharing. As I said
earlier, it's great when young people get interested in this hobby.
And I'm glad my website can be a part of that experience. For those
who are curious, Steve is referring to the display case pictured at left.
If anyone is interested, I can put you in touch with him.
I really do enjoy getting your e-mails from all over the world and I'll
do my best to respond to them as promptly as I can, but I strongly
encourage you to join the
FORUM.
Not only will you get an immediate response from me, but from other
knowledgeable collectors, as well.
